SEAN WAITE Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Sociology at Memorial University of Newfoundland
What students think:
Sean is a great prof and he's passionate about what he teaches which helps with the 2.5 hour lectures!
Dr. Waite is a fantastic lecturer and an excellent prof. He was easy to understand as well as funny and engaging, which was appreciated in a 2.5 hour class.
Sean is an amazing prof! I enjoy his class so much and he talks about very interesting topics. He's pretty funny and his lectures aren't dry. He doesn't put a lot of info on the slides though so you have to go to class to fill in the extra info that he talks about while lecturing. I would definetly recommend him.
I just wanted to personally express my gratitude about this enjoyable time that you've given us with SOCI 377. Having attended many classes with 600+ people and professors that are more research-oriented than teaching-inclined, I can say that it has been one of the best academic experiences for me at McGill in Sociology and beyond. I think that you have great pedagogical skills, which makes it so much easier for students to perceive the material. In my view, it's extremely important, since there's not so much emphasis on teaching how to teach, forgive the tautology.
It's been a very exciting and mind-opening month of May, and I truly think that more people have to be aware of these "deviant" topics if they consider themselves knowledgeable of the world. Math and Chemistry do not really teach you to be reflective.
I wish you all the good luck with your work! Have a great summer and please don't stop teaching people :)
I just wanted to thank you for being a wonderful teacher. You were energetic and made the topic very interesting. I can honestly say that you are one of the best teachers that I've had. So keep on doing exactly what you are now
I just wanted to thank you again so much.. I really learned a great deal from this course (even if I don't get a decent grade, I won't be distressed because i really had a great time at the class). Also, you were always available for individual consultation so thank you for that as well!
I hope this email reaches you well! I just wanted to send you a quick thank-you note for being such a great instructor for SOCI 377 this summer. I picked this class because I saw that you were teaching it and I very much enjoyed having you as a TA for Crime and thought you would do a great job teaching a course, and I was right. Getting up for 8:30 class every day is not fun (especially during the summer) and you made it very easy! You are so enthusiastic and helpful, and your teaching style is great - it was extremely easy to remember the material because it was presented so clearly with lots of examples. It is not often (I have found, anyhow) that instructors make class so enjoyable, so thank you.
I hope you have a great summer!
I just wanted to thank you for being such a great instructor this summer!! I really, really enjoyed the class (even though it was at 8:30) and I learned a lot from it! As a student who wants to go to graduate school and hopefully teach in the future, I was constantly thinking if I become an instructor, I would want to teach like you do! It's not always easy to find professors who are as energetic, enthusiastic and helpful as you are, who can make students love the topic and study really hard for it. Thank you very much for your help and your positive comments.
Thank you for making my first experience in a sociology class absolutely wonderful. Your energy and passion was totally contagious and I loved every class and was so happy I was able to get into it. You even made the 8:30 time bearable and trust me I am anything but a morning person. I wish you the best of luck on all your future endeavours, deviant or not!
This was one of the best classes I have taken so far at McGill, mostly because you made the material memorable and gave examples that were relevant and varied to clarify the material. The class was engaging. I really learned a lot and actually enjoyed coming to an 8:30am class. Thank you!!
Sean Waite went above and beyond in so many ways and really made this an amazing course. He is passionate, engaging, funny and nice. Every evaluated aspect of the course was laid out clearly and was extremely fair. The readings are all interesting, relevant and very educational. As a student from outside the Arts department, I found that all theories and terms were explained well within the course materials and I never felt like I was at a disadvantage because this is not my area of study. I learned a great deal from this course and enjoyed it just as much; I even plan to continue reading about some of the subjects addressed in this course.
Wonderful instructor - Professor Waite is a real gem - keep him around McGill! Very informative and engaging class - I learned a lot!
Excellent instructor and course. The topics were interesting and Sean Waite is very engaging and funny. He really makes going to an 8:30am class an enjoyable experience!
Overall, great lecturer! My only concern was with the amount of reading assigned, which was impossible to read within the span of four weeks....
Great class. Best teacher at McGill. I do not regret taking this summer class at all and I wish I could take more classes with Sean!
